Auto-translate
Auto-translate helps you generate translations using AI, either as suggestions while editing or as a bulk translation for an entire language. You stay in control of what gets saved.
Two ways to use auto-translate
Section titled “Two ways to use auto-translate”1. Suggestions while editing
Section titled “1. Suggestions while editing”While editing a single key, you can request an AI-generated suggestion for a specific language.
This is useful when:
- You’re working on individual strings
- You want to review and tweak translations one by one
- You don’t want to overwrite existing values automatically
Suggested translations:
- Are generated on demand
- Do not replace existing values automatically
- Only count as strings once you save them
2. Bulk translate a language
Section titled “2. Bulk translate a language”You can also auto-translate an entire language at once.
This is useful when:
- Adding a new language to an existing project
- Filling in many missing translations quickly
- Bootstrapping translations before review
When bulk translating, you can choose whether to:
- Translate only empty values
- Or replace existing translation values
Replacing existing values cannot be undone, so use this option carefully.
Providers and API keys
Section titled “Providers and API keys”Auto-translate requires an external AI provider.
Using your own provider key
Section titled “Using your own provider key”- Bring your own API key
- You are billed directly by the provider
- Translatable does not add any markup
Best practices
Section titled “Best practices”- Use suggestions for high-visibility or sensitive UI text
- Use bulk translate to fill gaps quickly, then review
- Avoid blindly replacing existing translations in production projects
- Always review AI-generated output before shipping
Limitations
Section titled “Limitations”- Auto-translate works on text values only
- Formatting and placeholders should be reviewed carefully
